Fall Colors

Just got back today from a mini vacation to Lake Placid. We were lucky enough to get a couple days of gorgeous weather. In just shy of three days, I have over 650 photos to comb through...there aught to be a couple keepers in there, no? I hope to post a couple in the coming days.

This one is pretty self explanitory...a shot of some leaves...on a tree...that are turning color :) Didn't do too much as far as editing is concerned - adjusted some colors and contrast, nothing too fancy. Enjoy.

I worked on another photo last night for over an hour and was just never satisfied with it - so I posted umm, nothing. Lessons learned - Photoshop can't really make a so-so photo a great photo. Anyway - enjoy this one. Must take more photos.

Before I started shooting again recently and reading a whole lot more about photography in general, I never understood why shooting in the middle of a bright sunny day was such a horrible idea. Now, I almost never go out during the daylight hours just to shoot - I'll usually choose a cloudy day and/or dusk (since sun rise is still pretty early :P).

Anyway, today was a different story. Bright, sunny, and beautiful it was - and I with my camera. There is a Civil War encampment near us this weekend, so I figured what the heck. I have some shots from that which I might end up posting but I'm starting with something other else - sculpture. Went the B&W route here to try and bring out some of the details more than color would allow. I'm not completely happy with the conversion - I tired a Lightroom only approach. Maybe I just don't have the formula right - but it's not as dramatic as I've been able to accomplish with Photoshop in the past. Your thoughts?

Got me some new glass so I went on a little photo walk this evening. Definitely a significant difference with a much wider angle - even with the 1.6x crop factor on my camera. Then again, going from 50mm as my widest lens to a 16mm is a big jump regardless.

Enough about the glass - took a couple of exposures here and merged to an HDR. I'm hoping the HDR part doesn't stick out like a sore thumb...I was going for more subtle. Was it successful?

Just downloaded me some Lightroom 2 - checking it out for the 30 days before I decide whether or not to fork over the cash moneys. I will say that it's a certain leg up from The Bridge. Right now I'm loving the Adjustment Brunch - Adobe hit that one outta the park for sure. I used it here to pump up the exposure on some of the white spots on the rock so it would stand out a bit more and add some 'pop.' There will be much more playing to be certain.

The leaves are already turning here in the Northeast - and summer is barely over.

Tried a little different technique with this one - set the leaf right over my external flash. At first it was too bright - even after taking the flash down three stops. So I used a napkin, of all things, to diffuse and take some of the punch out of the light. The vignetting is natural from the light falloff at the edges. Then just basically added some sharpening in PS. Let me know what ya think!

I've been fighting with this image for a bit here and there. I can't yet decide if I should have gone with a selective color image or not (so just the butterfly would be in color). It would certainly stand out more - but I'm not sure it would have improved the overall image. Anyway - this is pretty much straight out of the camera other than some adjustments in Bridge. The shallow depth of field really helped out with eliminating background distractions.

Been gone for awhile - at least from the photography. I have been taking shots, but nothing too exciting. Been busy elsewhere. Anyway, I'm back with this shot. I saw the sun coming in the window behind the flowers and thought it would be neat to get a silhouette of the plant. I also did some adjusting in Bridge to get the end product which looks almost painting like. I think the parts where the color kind of sneaks through because of the plants proximity to the shear brings something a little more interesting to the shot.

This couple saw me shooting and asked if they'd be in my way if that sat out on the end of the rock pile. Little did they know that they were the perfect addition to the photo. The sun and clouds also seemed to cooperate. I did shoot a pano set of this sunset as well - I'll probably post that next. Hopefully it's not sunset overkill :)

It turns out, it's extremely difficult to get a shot of fireworks if you're not at a fireworks show and can't really anticipate what's going to happen. A long lens is also certainly helpful. So it turns out, no fireworks shots this 4th. Perhaps Labor Day?

Anyway - a little something different here. A shot of sneakers. I figured I'd break up the monatomy a bit. I do have some more shots I'll be putting up soon...similar to others I've posted in the past. Anyway, hope you enjoy this one as a little something different.

Lately, I've been reading more about photography than I've been taking pictures...so today I got my camera and took some pictures! I can read all I want - but I'm not going to get any better if I don't take what I read and apply it to my photos. Hopefully, I've demonstrated some of my newly acquired knowledge in this photo of a lovely tiger lily.

This was taken with natural light coming in through a window with my 100mm macro - which is why it's such a long exposure. Other than being cropped a bit and increasing the blacks - not much post here. I expect to post at least one more tiger lily from today's shoot soon. Enjoy.

Yes, it's been awhile. I've been reading more about photography than doing photography which doesn't much help for improvements. Anyway, on to the photo.

As you may have guessed, this is a black and white conversion. I tried out the conversion in Adobe Camera Raw - and I think it worked quite well in this instance. I found it doesn't work in all instances though. And believe it or not, none of the blacks are clipped on this - I really wanted to get the blacks as deep as I could, it just wasn't the same without them this dark...didn't have the impact. What do you think?

A long exposure from Sacandaga Lake. I did several of these with an ND filter - unfortunately, the one I had wasn't strong enough to get longer exposures in daylight. This was the last shot I took of the evening after the sun had set but there was still ambient light. Anyway - I thought this one came out pretty cool with the waves up against the rocks.

I normally wouldn't put up a photo from my point and shoot - but I thought this was a pretty cool photo. This was taken awhile back during a short trip to DC. What was neat is that in every picture I've ever seen of the Washington Monument, you could never see the different color bricks. Well, this one you can't either - I saw it in person. Cool stuff.

I did some editing on this with curves. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get out all the crap the small little CCD put in there. Ah well, still came out pretty good me thinks.

This shot is from the Saratoga National Historical Park. Really neat stuff. Turning point of the war and all - right in my back yard.

Anywho - the sky was wicked boring that day, so I did my best, but most of the shots aren't worth posting. Had the circular polarizer on all day, so that helped somewhat. Enjoy.

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I invested in some new photo gear: a speedlite, a wireless transmitter, and some other flash accessories. This is a shot that I took using the speedlite along with the transmitter. After only taking a few shots, I can totally see the benefit of having two flashes - maybe someday. And on another note - spring has sprung...I hope. So there should be more shots of stuff coming soon...as long as I get off my butt and get out there and take some pictures!

I used a similar technique on this photo to what I used on yesterday's photo. Instead of just a blue window, it now becomes about the window and the shadows with the increased contrast. I think it ends up actually becoming a more balanced photo. I'm beginning to explore more of the options in Camera Raw that can really make an impact on the original photo. But maybe I should be concentrating on taking more photos than messing around with computer settings. Eh.

On another note, I ordered some new camera gear today from B&H. I picked up an external flash and some other lighting gear to expand my "studio" equipment. I'm excited to start trying out stuff with a flash. I've almost exclusively used natural light for the photos I've posted here - so look for some new lighting stuff in the weeks to come.

Digging through the archives, I came across this photo. I'm snowed in tonight, so I didn't have a chance to go out shooting. Ok, if I'm honest with myself it's more like I'm lazy and didn't go out shooting. All this snow could make for some good shots tomorrow though, so we'll see. I was amazed there were still leaves on the tress this time of year. Because of the fog and sun, these had a nice backlight to them. Nature's softbox :)

Another shot from Yaddo. I desperately wanted to get that fog through the woods shot during my trip, but I think it was just too foggy - or I just didn't execute; one of the two.

Anyway, here's a closeup shot of some pine bark. After I realized the shutter speed on this was so slow, I'm amazed it ended up this sharp. Gotta love the ability to just rip through those memory cards!

Iron Gate

An iron gate in the Yaddo flower gardens. Yaddo is an artists' community located on a 400-acre estate in Saratoga Springs, New York. A good portion of the grounds are open to the public year round. In the spring and summer there are spectacular flower gardens throughout the property. It's obviously not spring in this shot.

I took this shot earlier this week during a really foggy day. I thought it might be a really good day to take some photos in the fog to lend that certain mood it always creates. Well, I learned two things: 1) Sometimes it can be too foggy; 2) I need a wider angle lens and/or a full frame camera.

Despite the dense fog, I think I was able to get a couple photos that are post worthy. Hope you enjoy them - much different than ribbons, no?

Red Gerbera Daisey

This one was taken way back when White Gerbera Daisey was taken. A bit of a different treatment on this one - it has a "darker" mood than the other one.

As you may have noticed, a good portion of these photos are from my archives. I've got stuck inside syndrome. While I'm not really stuck inside and could take photos outdoors (in the freezing cold), it's not what really inspires me. I love nature, flowers, the woods, etc. ...as you can probably tell from my photos.

What keeps you motivated throughout the winter while the snow is flying and your muse is dead and gone until the spring?

Behold - the mighty clementine. I await these every winter. It's odd to me how one can be so much worse than the other right in the same box. But I still buy a couple cases every winter. Delicious.

It's been a couple days since I've posted, but it's not because I was slacking off. I've been working on some changes to the blog. If you'll so kindly notice, instead of having the purchase link in the top nav where it isn't so obvious, I've added a nice little floaty div above the photo. I've even set it's opacity so you can still see the image behind it. Nifty, huh? Had I been a master of CSS, it wouldn't have taken me so long to accomplish - but you live and learn :) Here's to more posting of photos and less hacking of CSS.

This one was taken the other day after my trip to the gym. On the way home, the sky seemed ripe for the taking, so I ran in and grabbed my camera.

I spent a good deal of time editing this one - there were power lines and a street light in the picture originally.

A bit of a different shot today. This was taken in the basement of Vanderbuilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY. If you haven't been, it's an amazing place - and is one of the smaller mansions that the Vanderbuilt's owned. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me!

So, the shot - unfortunately this one is at a pretty high ISO, thanks to the no flash policy and the not much light. Fortunately, I had my trusty f/1.4 50mm - and the XTi does an ok job of noise suppresion at high ISO...at least much better than the XT. Well, enjoy.

No Photoshop magic here, just a macro lens and some shallow depth of focus. A little untraditional in a focus sense, but I think it's reminiscent of a Georgia O'Keefe. This was also taken at the same time as the previous post.

The colors on this one threw me - but it was taken in the spring believe it or not.

And on a more technical note, I recently upgraded to Adobe CS3 - and let me tell you, the updates to Camera Raw were worth the upgrade alone. Fantastic!

A few hangers on from warmer weather. Just did the basic editing on this one. Unfortunately, this was in direct sunlight so some of the highlights are blown out. But I do like the contrast of the bright berries with the more stark background - so it came out ok regardless of blown highlights. What are your thoughts?

This one if from April last year. Also, the jpg version of this is a bit brighter in the blues than the original version. Interesting considering the PSD wasn't even 16 bit. Ah well.

I did go out and shoot yesterday, but didn't come away with anything worth posting. I've got the day off tomorrow, so I think I'm going to go out and wonder around and see what I can see. Yay for long weekends!

This was taken a long while back - a little over a year ago. I just happened to be fooling around with it in Photoshop the other day and wanted to post it here. This image hasn't been changed much from the original - just levels, contrast, that sort of thing. And cropped to 1 by 1. For tomorrow look for this in black and white. I think it's a good candidate - but we'll see!

Stained Glass #2

Another stained glass shot from the shooting I did the other day. I liked the dark but colorful aspect of this one.

I've read that it's important for a photographer to develop a "style" - not because everything they shoot would be in that style, but because it sets you apart from the pack. I don't have a style...I don't think. Maybe more shooting and more editing will cure my style-itis.

And it turns out that our "storm" wasn't much more than some flurries. But I'm sure there will be more opportunities to get out there and get some good snow shots later this winter.

This is one of the cooler Christmas presents I got this year - it reacts to sound and when it hits something with either of it's antenae, it backs up and takes a new course.

Apparently green is a theme this post and last - I'll try to mix it up next time.

On the downside of this image, I've never noticed how dusty something really is until it's photographed with the macro. Hopefully a lesson well learned.

A recent gift, this little guy is only a quarter inch tall. The work is pretty impressive. The artist must have had some incrediably steady hands. I love the big eyes and ear to ear grin.

Finally got around to shooting some new stuff today - it's been too long. We're supposed to get some snow come Monday, so I'm hoping to get some shots after the storm.

Stained glass has always been impressive to me - and looking at it with a close up eye can be pretty neat too. Here's a marco shot of small part of a lamp - true size is about half and inch. Cropped a bit and adjusted some levels.

This is one of the first "real" photos that I took when I got my DSLR. There were many taken fooling around and figuring things out, but this was the first one that I was really happy with.

It's not a true panoramic, it's just cropped like one.

White Gerbera Daisy

So no resolutions, but I'm bribing myself. At least five posts here and at least two times a week shooting, and I'm buying myself a new tripod. Out with the cheap, in with the ballhead!

This is another shot from the archives, back when I was shooting. Some of you might disagree, but I like how in this shot the whites start to get washed out at the right and you can really only make out the pedals because of some color and shawdow. Thoughts?

Oh, and this one has a bit more editing than usual - can you tell what it is?

Look, another picture of a flower. You'd think that with all the pictures of flowers I take, I'd begin to know their names...or not.

This is the first macro shot I've posted - but I have plenty more in the hopper. Having never exerpienced a real macro lens before, it's been an interesting learning experience. The really shallow depth of field can be a blessing...and a curse.

This one is a little different than the others - not all bright and sunny. But I like the mood this one portrays. It is a little soft though - handheld at 1/15.

Another shot of flowers from St. Lucia. I think you'll find over time that I have something for taking shots of flowers. Not sure what it is, but there's something about them that draws me in. One of the things I'm pushing myself to do is take more subjects that are outside my norm. So if you see me posting flower after flower, say so.

The title of this post would be a whole lot better if I knew the name of this varietal. But what can you do? I do think the depth of field on this is a bit shallow - but I liked it enough to post it anyway. I'd be interested to hear what you think.

Since I'm just starting this up, I thought I'd just mention a little about my method briefly - being the digital age and all, who knows what the original looked like. First I'll say that I shoot most everything in RAW, then use Adobe RAW to make mostly minor adjustments. I may then pull a photo into Photoshop to do some minor editing, "burning," cropping, or the like.

If I do more than that to a photo, I'll try to make mention of it. I will say I do know my way around Photoshop, but I have a lot to learn. Letting you know who I've accomplished something might help you, and will definitely help me!

I think I have a few more shots that I'll be posting from St. Lucia after this one, then I'll be working my way backwards through my archives. As I've yet to post any of the photos I've taken over the past year or so, and needing to bolster my archives here, I figure what better time than now.

Another shot from our recent trip to St. Lucia. While this shot was taken at the resort, these pastel colors were common throughout the city. I figure these pictures might help a bit with the cold and nasty weather we're currently experiencing in the Northeast.

On a less photo related note, and more a photoblog related note, I'm just now realizing that this blog is out there for people to look at - and I've got one photo up (two now). So over the next couple of days or so, I'm going to try and post more photos so you folks have more to look at than just one photo. I mean, you go through all the trouble of coming here, I'd like to provide a better experience for you.

Hopefully the photos will be good too!
